What to Consider When Choosing a Racking System
Choosing the right system is about more than just space. Here are a few things to think about:
- Stock type: Are you storing pallets or hand-loaded stock? Do you require stock-specific storage for tyres, carpets or other non-standard sized items?
- Storage volume: Do you require bulk storage for low-turnover stock? Double deep or drive-in racking offers greater storage capacity for larger volumes.
- Access requirements: Do you need direct access to each pallet, or do you store multiple pallets of similar items?
- Load capacity: What is the weight of stock being stored? We can accommodate specific load requirements when designing your tailored setup. All our systems are supplied and installed with AS4084:2023 compliant load signage.
- Warehouse layout: Ceiling height, forklift clearance and aisle width all affect your final design.
We’re here to help you make the right call. Whether it’s one bay or a full warehouse fit-out, we’ll guide you through the process.

FAQs
What is pallet racking, and how does it function in a warehouse setting?
Pallet racking is a structured storage system designed to hold pallets in an organised, vertical setup, making the most of floor space and keeping items accessible. It’s essential for efficient inventory management in warehouses.
What are the different types of pallet racking systems available?
Popular pallet racking systems include selective racks for direct access, drive-in racks for high-density storage, and double-deep racks for maximising aisle space. While not technically pallet racking, cantilever racks are often used in warehouses for storing long or bulky items, complementing pallet racking systems.
How do I choose the right pallet racking system for my warehouse?
Consider your inventory’s weight, size, turnover rate, and your warehouse layout. Selective racks suit frequent access needs, while drive-in racks are ideal for bulk storage.
What are the standard pallet racking dimensions I should consider?
Pallet racking dimensions vary based on application and storage needs. Here’s a quick guide to standard sizes:
Frame Heights:
- Ranges from 1800mm to 9000mm+ to suit different warehouse setups.
Frame Depths:
- 600mm: Ideal for tyre storage or shelving.
- 838mm: Commonly used for pallet storage.
- 1219mm: Designed for carpet racking or storing sheets of building materials.
Beam Lengths:
- 1372mm: Fits one standard-sized pallet (half beam).
- 2591mm: Fits two standard-sized pallets with no overhang.
- 2743mm: Fits two standard-sized pallets with overhang.
- 3048mm: Suitable for oversized pallets, sheets of materials, or bulk items.
- 3353mm, 3658mm, 3810mm: Used for bridge bays, furniture storage, or bulky but lighter items.
Can pallet racks be configured to fit specific warehouse layouts?
Yes, pallet racks can be configured in height, depth, and width to fit unique layouts and different pallet sizes.
What safety considerations should I keep in mind when using a warehouse racking system?
Ensure load limits are followed, beams are secured with safety clips, and any damaged components are promptly reported and replaced. Keep aisles clear for safe access and ensure machinery is operated by trained personnel.
How much weight can a typical pallet rack hold?
Weight capacity varies, with standard racks supporting up to 2,800kg per pair of beams. Total bay loads typically range from 4,000kg to 10,000kg, depending on frame height and the number of beam levels per bay.
What are the benefits of using a pallet racking system in my storage facility?
Pallet racking maximises storage, keeps items organised, enhances accessibility, and makes efficient use of floor space, improving overall warehouse productivity.
How do I properly install a pallet rack to ensure safety and stability?
We would always recommend opting for expert installation services when installing pallet racking to ensure the longevity of your system. Poorly installed systems are dangerous and will likely involve higher maintenance and repair costs in the long run. Additionally, in line with AS4084:2023, all pallet racking which is mechanically loaded (forklifts etc.) requires certification in the form of Safe Working Load Rating signs. We are unable to produce and supply load signs if installed by others.
